Westgate, Las Vegas, NV

One word - sportsbook. This is what the Westgate prides itself on. The largest one in the world in fact. Westgate is football central. If you want somewhere to watch the games with a fun crowd, go to the Westgate. When we visited back in October last year, we got to the Superbook (as it likes to call itself) about an hour before kick off for the days' NFL games - could we find a seat in there? Nope. And there's 400 seats available too ... But not to fear! The International Theatre is opened up and it has plenty more seating - they're actually holding a Super Bowl viewing party in there this weekend - it's $100 per person however it's all you can eat and drink with reserved seating. Really quite a bargain to be honest! Anyhoo, back to the casino. It's small but modern and as I notice with all the casinos we visit, it's very visually pleasing. New, clean and a good selection of old and new slots. The Westgate does have a poker room - it's in the sportsbook too however it is quite small. There's a good mix of table games too - Blackjack, Craps and Roulette to name a few. And if you've never played, all the dealers are able to explain to first timers the rules of each game - approaching a table at a quiet time of day is recommended and then the dealers will be more than happy to give you the lowdown :) Food and drink options are a-plenty in the Westgate and if you're hankering for an Asian delight, it's the place to go. 4 of the main restaurants in the Westgate feature Asian fare - there's Benihana, Bar Sake, Rikki Tikki Sushi and the Silk Road Asian Bistro. There's also Sids's Café which has American homestyle cooking and features the Elvis Sandwich (which I can only assume has something to do with peanut butter, jelly, bananas and burger patties) and the Edge Steakhouse if you're looking for somewhere to sit down to eat. Quicker choices include Nacho Tacos, Fortuna, Fortuna Swirl and the Fresh Buffet. You've got plenty of options. And if you just want to grab a coffee before heading into the sportbook or theatre to watch the football, the Starbucks near the sportsbook does an awesome breakfast sandwich :) Finally, something I learned this weekend when we visited was that the Westgate was the home of Elvis when he was performing in Las Vegas. Back then it was the Las Vegas Hilton but he stayed there. In the hotel lobby there's a big old statue of the King as well as the flyers for his concerts (as seen at the top of the blog post for today). They also offer "Elvis Suite Tours" - here's a video from Fox 10 in Phoenix that shows a quick insight into the suite - it also features the ill-fated Elvis : The Exhibition which I had a quick read about - a sad end to an exhibit that looked pretty cool.
