Sunset Station Casino, Henderson, NV

Here it is! Review #1 is in the books! Last night we visited the Sunset Station Casino - it's one of the off strip casinos in the "Station Family" and is linked in with Wildfire, Fiesta and Palms casinos as well as the other Station ones. It is conveniently located at 1301 W Sunset Road in Henderson - 702-547-7777 which is also across the street from the Sunset Galleria Mall so when you're all filled up on gambling, you can shoot across the street to spend your winnings at the mall! :D Also, for you Pokémon Go fans out there, there's a couple of gyms and a few Pokestops at the casino too to stock up on those Ultra Balls and catch yourself a Wobbuffet ;) So, our first thing we looked for to review was the poker room - short answer, there isn't one. The casino does however have a Keno Lounge and Bingo Hall so if they're your thing ... you got em! We also noticed upon entering the main gaming floor, the casino really is quite smokey - some are non smoking now however this one is not. There is an exceptionally small non smoking slots area but its very very small. I suppose if smoking in casinos does bother you though, you're probably better off not visiting one :) We moved to the Sportsbook area. Sportsbooks in casinos always amaze me ... my favorite so far that I've been in is actually the Westgate - it's a sight to behold but more of that in a later review - the one at the Sunset is actually pretty decent too for an off strip venue and is very spacious. It has 2 large screens with many small ones surrounding it as well as the odds boards up on the walls. There are also 2 layers of screens - kind of in 2 rings in a way - the second ring of seats features small screens with many sporting options being shown on them. We were in the sportsbook around 5.55pm and was impressed that odds for the next day's NHL and NBA games were out so we were able to pick those up. They also had a good selection of futures bet cards available too (World Series, Stanley Cup etc). All in all the sportsbook is decent at the Sunset and is worth a visit for a cheeky bet or two.
Coming out of the sportsbook you find yourself in a food court - reasonable and quick options are available such as Panda Express, Pizza Forte, Hoffmans Hot Dogs, Subway, FatBurger and a Ben & Jerry's Café. There's also a play area for kids with a café attached called Kids Quest. Also worth mentioning here is the Sunset has a Regal Cinema with IMAX screen inside and a bowling center as well. Plenty to do if you're not about the gambling. There are plenty of bars dotted around too - some not named, some are. Club Madrid and Bar Seville appear to be the main ones. The food court also gives way to a couple more established eateries - there is an Oyster House as well as an Italian Restaurant called Pasta Cucina - we didn't eat in here but it smelled amazing as we walked by! Feast Buffet is the place to go for various selections of, well, buffet food which is where we chose to dine - but more of that later ...
After being in the food court you find yourself on the slot gaming floor. I love slot machines ... that's part of the appeal of a casino for me, all the ding ding ding and the lights and the flashing ... Mr G calls me a magpie and he's right ... anything shiny, flashy and sparkly and I'm there ... I guess that's why I love the slots so much. The slots here are quite old (a lot of which are video poker games) but there is a reasonable variation - some of the newer games are available such as Pacman, Anchorman, National Lampoons Vacation and Willy Wonka but the majority are older clunky type ones. We had ourselves a tinkle on Monopoly, Pacman and Willy Wonka with a little bit of success on Monopoly - the others however were not as "loose" when it came to our gaming.
Mingled into the corner of the slots are the table games - there's quite a few tables and some of the games featured include Roulette, Pai Gow, Texas Hold Em and Craps to name a few. The Sunset also boasts that they have 31 Classic - it's Nevada's newest table game is only exclusively available at the Sunset Station. It's a 3 card live table game and according to https://sunsetstation.sclv.com/Gaming/Table-Games - you can have payouts as high as 200/1. Check it out!
Our final stop at the casino was the Buffet. It was time for dinner when we'd finished wandering around so decided to pick the Feast Buffet - or should I say the award winning Feast Buffet as advertised! Pricing was decent - including tip for the pair of us the cost was $30. The cashier lady was exceptionally helpful and the drink server at our table when we were seated was also very nice too. There were several choices of food at the buffet - on entrance there was a large salad bar and then several other selections - Asian (Chinese food only), Italian, American (featuring the Carvery), International (Mexican food only) and then the desserts section. I opted to start with the salad bar - a little disappointing I'm afraid. Not a great deal of options when it came to greens - iceberg or spinach -neither of which there was a lot of left. The iceberg was kind of dry and had some red cabbage and carrot mixed in but it wasn't the greatest. A little further along was diced carrots, tomatoes, onion and cucumber slices and then a nice selection of dressings such as Italian, honey mustard, bleu cheese, ranch and a couple of vinaigrettes. Next stop was the Asian section for me as I had a small hankering for Chinese food whilst Mr G went for the International aka Mexican food. The food in the Asian area seemed to be a little mis-labeled to me - I opted for a small plate of chicken with green beans, some spare ribs (that were noted as chicken) some vegetable rice and sweet and sour chicken. The chicken and green beans did not have any chicken I'm afraid but the ribs and sweet and sour were pretty decent. I'd say the soft noodles were a no go though - now, please note that things may not always be like this at the Feast Buffet however my experience in "Asian" was not that great. Mr G's Mexican was standard - green chile pork verde, taco meat, shredded chicken, sides of refried beans, rice, tortillas that kind of thing - and standard was his opinion - not awesome, not bad. Just standard. After those plates, we decided to try another section each (this is a buffet after all, gotta sample all delights) and Mr G headed to the carvery. There were several types of meat to choose from - turkey, ham, chicken and kielbasa with your usual companions - collared greens, mashed potatoes, stuffing. The selections Mr G went for turkey with cranberry sauce (canned, in his opinion), kielbasa, collared greens, mash and stuffing. The turkey and kielbasa were nice however the sides were just average - nothing at all to write home about. I then headed to desserts whereas Mr G waited to see what I came back with before deciding if he was going to partake in the sweet side of the buffet. Plenty of options to satisfy the sweet tooth but also very standard - brownies, carrot cake, lemon meringue pie, banoffee pie, chocolate whipped cream pie, jello, soft serve ice cream and a gelato bar. I would have gone for the gelato personally, however, 2 things stopped me - the size of the queue and the fact there was barely any left. So, I went lemon meringue which was actually rather good. I can only assume the gelato bar is very good due to the fact it was almost all gone and the queue was large so, if you're ever at the Feast Buffet at the Sunset Station - I'd head there first - seems like its the top drawer!!
Now, to summarize, the Sunset Station Casino is a nice place to wander around. The fast food options are good, however the buffet seems like it might be hit and miss. There is a reasonable number of old and new slot machines and the general atmosphere and décor are very nice. It can be a little heavy on the smoke in some areas and the Sports Book is easily accessible. I'd say the Sunset may be more of a place for locals rather than tourists as it's got that kind of feel to it - that's not to say a tourist couldn't have a good time here as there is plenty to do and the mall is also across the road as previously mentioned. More reviews coming soon .... Viva!
